Social responsibility is important for businesses because it is a direct reflection of their reputation. People in general aren’t going to support businesses that don’t uphold the same morals and ethics that their customers do. Regardless of what are beliefs are, in today’s society there is a certain unwritten set of societal ethics and morals and can directly influence the work environment. In business today, the biggest social responsibilities revolve around, consumers, employees, and the environment, and government has played a responsibility in ensuring that regulation is enforced. With consumer production, regulation has been created by government to protect the safety and well being of the consumer, preventing unfair competition and deception, and preventing fraud tampering of any food, drug, or cosmetics. From warning labels, to age restrictions, to breaking up monopolies, government since the start of the 20th century has played a large role in consumer protection. With employee protection, government has instituted labor laws and regulation to protect employees. These laws can range from anti-discriminatory laws to general welfare laws that protect employees. Ensuring the protection of employees guarantees a better opportunity for everyone. Lastly, with environmental protection, there are many laws that protect all shapes and forms of life. This can be air quality, water, protection of endangered species and land, preserving ecosystems, and creating corporate liability for pollution. In a perfect would, it would be nice that everyone be morally and ethically responsible, but that not the reality we live in. Thankfully there is certain regulation that keeps everyone honest, to ensure the safety and wellbeing for all.
